"Lucan was once a prince--the fourth brother, who was able to choose his role in the world, until his uncle Magnus killed Lucan's entire family and took over the throne. Lucan barely escaped with his life and has slowly and carefully been building up the Opposition forces ever since.

Branna is the Raven, the high priestess of her small land of magic-users that Magnus and his forces have been working to destroy over the years. Magnus is holding a group of sorcerers and threatening them with death and destruction unless they do his bidding. Branna is one of the few who are free to oppose Magnus. She comes to search for a Priest--her counterpart in a special spell that can finally defeat Magnus. Lucan is definitely not a priest, but Branna is strongly attracted by him. They both are working for the same thing, the death of Magnus, but through different means. And Branna's guard seems unreasonably filled with dislike by Lucan.

Destiny is clearly at work here, with visions and absent Gods and Goddesses affecting the outcome. There are secret forts and spies and plots and battles. This is a light fantasy with a light romance plot. It has plenty of over-worn elements, but still, the story of Lucan and Branna is interesting enough to carry all else along and make for a fun read."

  • Raven's Quest by Anya Bast
    Paranormal Romance -Feb. 1st, 2011
    4 stars

Raven's Quest is a magical fantasy adventure mixed with romance that reminded me of a grown up fairy tale. This story was previously published and is not as sexually charged as the author's usual books.

Gallus Navious Lucan was miraculously saved when the rest of his royal family was murdered by his evil uncle. Now his uncle controls the military and uses them to defeat the small rebel force that Lucan has secretly raised. Lucan's quest to bring his uncle down is interrupted by the appearance of a lovely sorceress. Unfortunately, sorceresses have been outlawed and enslaved by his uncle. Lucan saves the beautiful woman named Branna ta Cattia and learns that she is a high priestess on a mission to find a priest and enact a ritual to dissolve the evil magic that Lucan's uncle controls. Only then can everyone in their world be free. But Lucan and Branna are not ready to reveal their secrets, and their unexpected attraction makes it difficult to trust their feelings for each other. Can they open up and aid one another before it is too late?

This is a light fantasy read. I loved the kingdoms the author created and how magic worked. In fact, I would like to know more about each of the kingdoms especially Tir na Ban and its people. Lucan is a noble hero who works feverishly to return the kingdom to its former glory. Branna is also a worthy heroine, who although untested, believes in her Goddess and is willing to make sacrifices. These two admirable characters at first work against each other until they discover they have a common goal. I only wish they hadn't been at cross-purposes for such a long time and worked together sooner. One of the best parts is how evil Lucan's uncle was portrayed. He is despicable villain that you will love to hate. Readers who are used to Anya Bast's racier novels might be disappointed that this is gentler and slower book, but I found it engrossing.

Sweet and dreamy, this imaginative book will sweep you away to another world filled with magic and intrigue.

  • Duplicitous Magnus seizes the Dragon Throne of Numia, killing his royal family in the process. However, his nephew the heir Gallus Lucan survives the vicious assault. Lucan escapes. For the next fourteen years, Lucan prepares for a counter attack to remove his odious uncle from the throne. He has gathered an army of loyal soldiers.

The Raven of Tir na Ban High Branna ta Cattia knows the time is right to free her people from the oppressive rule of malevolent Magnus. Thus, the High Priestess journeys to Numia to meet the stranger who haunts her dreams; and to obtain an alliance to help liberate their respective people. When Branna and Lucan finally meet outside of her dreams, they are attracted to one another, but their goals differ. She wants to free their respective people while he wants revenge at any collateral cost. Their feelings for each other remains concealed as love intrudes with their need to defeat their mutual enemy, an abomination willing to kill anyone to keep his power.

Although the story line is straighter than I-80 through the Bonneville Flats and the villain is out of standard casting for an evil ruler, the lead couple makes for an engaging romantic fantasy as she must persuade her beloved that vengeance will harm his people. Each needs the other in more ways than just the alliance against his uncle, but both has doubts as she believes his heart is overrun with rage while he thinks she is an inane do-gooder without a plan or a prayer. Sub-genre fans will enjoy Anya Bast's exciting tale; previously published in 2004 under the name Joanna King.
