Following on the success of Feedback That Sticks (Oxford, 2013), Karen Postal demonstrates, through the words of forensic experts, how to translate complex, highly technical neuropsychological and psychological information for jurors in a way that is engaging, understandable, and (to quote Faulkner) sets the truth on fire. Testimony That Sticks shares the fruits of four years of in-depth interviews with over 70 seasoned forensic neuropsychologists and psychologists, as well as attorneys and judges, presenting what experts actually say on the stand how they use compelling analogies, metaphors, and succinct explanations of assessment processes and findings, as well as principles of productive expert testimony for direct and cross examination.
This book allows readers to be a fly on the wall as seasoned forensic neuropsychologists and psychologists share what they actually say on the stand their best strategies and techniques for communicating science to juries and other triers of fact. Readers also have access to the thoughts of attorneys and judges as they watch expert testimony and weigh in on what works and doesn't, and what they need from the forensic neuropsychology and psychology professions to create more productive testimony.
At its heart, the book shows how academics can shed their academic communication style learned in years of scientific training that results in the inability to communicate clearly and simply about psychology and neuroscience. This landmark book is about shedding jargon, giving academics permission to allow emotion to creep back into their language, freeing up body language, and using vivid, clear, language to create moments of genuine, productive communication with jurors and other triers of fact.

"Dr. Postal again excels in teaching neuropsychologists, lawyers, and everyone
in the legal world about the clear presentation of neuroscientific and neuropsychological
data. Jargon hinders us in every aspect of the practice of neuropsychology...and this
book provides a clear path for all to proceed when working with lawyers, when testifying
in court, and when relating with other experts. The chapter on testifying in a diverse world
is an absolute gem, and understanding social pragmatics is critical for all young female and

- The theme of Testimony That Sticks that is underscored in each of its twenty-three chapters is that everyone who suffers a mTBI recovers within three months. The is no “miserable minorityâ€. If someone has a poor outcome with persistent symptoms, that person is either suffering from a psychiatric condition or is faking. The chapters reflect no scholarship, no bench science, and no research using the scientific method. Instead, Dr. Postal has assembled interviews she conducted with her contributors and cobbled them together, topic by topic, interjecting transitions with limited commentary by her from her own experience as a forensic examiner. As I waded through the 475 pages taking notes that I thought would be helpful reminders dealing with Postal, I repeatedly thought “those technique were used in my caseâ€, or “I saw that one comingâ€, or “‘I’ve heard that before.†Many of the anecdotes are likely fictional and fantasy driven because no competent judge would ever permit a witness to ramble in the sort of unresponsive ways depicted. Shame on you Dr. P.
- I am an experienced clinical neuropsychologist who is just beginning to be asked to participate in forensic cases. I was searching for some guidance on how to approach the task of testifying in court and found this wonderful book. Imagine having at your fingertips the wisdom and knowledge of some of the most well known, experienced and scientifically informed neuropsychologists, supplemented by the observations of judges and attorneys. The content reflects these experts' decades of experience providing expert testimony that communicates effectively with juries and handling difficult cross examinations. This book may be one of the most informative texts in my field that I have ever read with specific guidance in many critical areas and access to content related to what are common issues in the courtroom. These experts provide specific guidance on the challenges of explaining complex issues like premorbid intelligence, statistical inference, and diversity and how to testify regarding sensitive issues in litigation. These experts are clearly grounded in science and critical thinking, and this comes across especially in chapters such as the one devoted to concussion. Dr. Postal has used her own excellent communication skills to create this valuable text that is sure to become an enduring reference. This book is a must for beginners and experienced clinicians alike who want to learn the fine art of communicating psychology and neuropsychology to juries. I give it my highest recommendation.
- Testimony That Sticks is an excellent book. It provides helpful advice and perspective from seasoned practitioners in neuropsychology and forensic psychology, many of whom have established the research evidence on which this book is based. It is also an excellent teaching tool, as it gives students more than just their teacher's perspective on forensic activities. It shows the student and developing professional just what to expect on cross-examination and that the inquiries are valid even if the methods are aggressive and uncomfortable. Many thanks to Dr. Postal for taking on such a valuable project!

Cheryl Weinstein PhD. ABPPcn - This book has saved me years of trial and error learning to craft incisive, compelling testimony. It brims with insights from attorneys, judges, and expert neuropsychologists that are enthralling and immediately applicable. Dr. Postal models the effective communication she advocates, expertly weaving art and science into a guidebook I couldn't put down.
From learning how to "Throw Energy Balls" and "Set the Truth on Fire" to maximizing persuasion with juries and attorneys, the blend of expert guidance and practical strategies makes this book a classic. I'm already reading it a second time! - I have occasion to do some testimony and this is the most comprehensive, entertaining, and practical guides to courtroom testimony that I have found. Just take a moment to go through the table of contents and you will see all the areas of testimony that are thoroughly covered. I love how Dr. Postal goes straight to the experts and how effectively she organizes the material so that you can use it as a quick reference or to go back and spend more time exploring all the terrific nuggets of knowledge. I will be recommending this book to colleagues and other people who might want to read about how to demystify science to share information and learn about effective communication techniques in general. This book will no doubt quickly become the authoritative resource in the field.
- Dr. Postal has distilled hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with highly respected neuropsychologists and psychologists in this engaging and clearly written book. How do we communicate neuroscience to people outside our field? Chapters address the importance of a strong scientific foundation for testimony combined with accessible communication techniques that disrupt what we learned in school about “how to talk like a doctor.†I highly recommend this book!
