Luciana American Girl Girl of the Year 2018 Book 1 Erin Teagan Lucy Truman 9781338186482 Books Reviews

  • With this American Girl book, Teagan introduces a character with a dream of being an astronaut and shows her path on the way to achieving her dream. While putting Luciana into a world full of STEM and robotics, she still maintains the reality of Luciana by reminding us all that she is still just a girl. This makes her much more relatable to the young daughters out there who want to have fun while also pursuing a life in a STEM career.

Throughout the book, Luciana finds herself facing challenges and fighting for her dream. She feels doubt and finds ways to overcome it. She meets new people and deals with meshing with others who are not quite the same as you. Although the idea of going to Space Camp is something that not ever girl will face, the situations she finds herself in are common to any girl's experience.

In "Luciana", Teagan creates an educational world that portrays some of the greatest lessons needed for tween girls (and younger) having to do with friendship, teamwork, leadership, and most importantly, realistically facing the path to your dreams. It is an easy read and a fun one for any young girl. It does not hit the reader so hard over the head with science that it feels too heavy for a young reader. Instead, it meshes subtle lessons about STEM and creating with the life of a young girl.
  • I bought this for my 4 year old. Although it is far above her reading level, she enjoys listening to the story. We would recap what we read the previous night, and read 2 to 3 chapters each night. She followed the storyline, and I was pleased that the bought taught many lessons. We read about girls building and coding robots, thinking outside of the box for solutions, and taking ownership of poor decisions. I am looking forward to reading more books about Luciana with my daughter, and inspiring her to reach for the stars.

Added Note My daughter likes Luciana so much that we now have purple clip in hair extensions we wear when reading her book.
  • Bought this for a friend's girl. She loves the American Girl books, and we gave her this on a trip to Kennedy Space Center that she accompanied us on. She loved it.
  • Going to Space Vamp was a great experience for the heroine, Lucians. She became a team captain and learned how to work with her team and other teams, in competition. She was hoping to become the best big sister she could be to an orphan who their family wanted to adopt.
  • I recommend this book if you like space. It's really great and interesting. I love the teamwork in this Luciana story! My cousin is a big american girl doll fan and she has the doll Luciana and so I decided to try out the first book and I loved it!
  • I purchased this book for my grandaughter. She is in 2nd grade. She loves it! I was concerned she might have difficulty with the reading level. She didn't. It is wonderful seeing her enjoying the storyline and being challenged. She can't wait to find out what happens next and is excited when she reads about Sally Ride whom she had studied about in class! It is a joy to have her read it aloud but even more so to see her enjoying reading to herself. A very good read.
  • Such a wonderful story with adventure. A great read for sure.
  • Both my daughter and I throughly enjoyed this one. An entertaining story with good morals. I would love to see a sequel to this.
